Ranikhet is a picturesque hill station and a cantonment town in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. Ranikhet is a popular hill resort well known for the views of the mighty Himalayas. Surrounded by Himalayan mountain ranges Ranikhet is situated in the upper Kumaon Hills at an altitude of about 1869 m (6 131 ft) above sea level. Ranikhet is located at a distance of about 59 km from Nainital and 50 km from Almora.

How To Reach Ranikhet

Ranikhet in Uttarakhand is just the perfect place to visit if you are a newly wedded couple or honeymooner. Even families can expect to spend some quality time in the midst of pristine nature. You can plan to reach Ranikhet by air, rail or road. Planning your travel from Delhi is a preferred option.
Reach Ranikhet By Air
The nearest and domestic airport to the city is Pantnagar Airport. The distance between Ranikhet and Pantnagar airport is around 119 kilo meters only. When one is get down at the airport may find taxis available there which takes about 2000 fro Pantnagar to Ranikhet per trip. Daily flights are operates from Delhi to Pantnagar. Delhi is the closest and international airways which well joined with most of the Indian cities as well as outside of the country. Direct taxis from Delhi to Ranikhet are also available covering a 9 hours distance and charging around Rs. 6500. Next airway is Jolly grant 172 kilo meters away from the Ranikhet.

Reach Ranikhet By Rail (By Train)
Railway is also one of the huge transportation systems, which is connected to most of the major and minor cities in India. Kathgodam is the closets railhead to the town. The railway station is situated at an aloofness of 80 kilo meter from Ranikhet. Pre-paid taxi services are also available from Kathgodam to Ranikhet which takes around Rs. 1500. On a regular basis train operates to Delhi and many other cities in India as well. From Ranikhet railway station buses and taxis easily hirable to Ranikhet. Train is also a convenient way of travelling to cover the long distances.

Tourists can also reach Ranikhet by motorable roadways. Railway is well connected with main cities of Uttarakhand states and northern cities. Most of the regions of Garhwal and Kumaon are well linked with Ranikhet. One can take buses from Anand Vihar ISBT gate Delhi to Almora and Kathgodam which are closer destination to reach Ranikhet.

Things to do in Ranikhet

The topography of Ranikhet is varied since it has uneven terrain that includes valleys, rocky climbs, chasms and meadows.  At Ranikhet, there are forests lying on inclines with diverse species of flora like pine, oak and deodar trees, streams and orchards along with numerous hidden mountain viewpoints.
 Jhula Devi Temple
The Jhula Devi Temple of Ranikhet is an ancient temple built in the 8th century, situated at 7 km from the town. The main deity of this temple is Goddess Durga and is a believed at this temple, that Jhula Devi has the powers to fulfil the wishes of all her devotees.

The temple houses a cluster of holy bells tied to its walls that are known for granting wishes on being ringed.

Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum and Memorial
The Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum and Memorial was built in Ranikhet in 1974, as a symbol of bravery and sacrifice made by soldiers of the place.

This memorial towers the famous Somnath Ground. The young soldiers from all over the world take the pledge of loyalty to their motherland at this memorial. To commemorate the sacrifice of soldiers, a parade is also held here every year. 

Rani Jheel
The Rani Jheel of Ranikhet is significant with the identity of this town. It is a large artificial lake built between two natural bridges of this town namely Canossa Convent School and Kendriya Vidyalaya.

Chaubatia
Chaubatia Orchard is situated at 10 km from the town of Ranikhet. This orchard comprises more than 200 varieties of fruits and flowers. A research laboratory is also situated within its premises.

Along with this, the surroundings of this place provides panoramic views of the snow clad mountain peaks of Himalayas, as well as  a few religious spots like Nanda Devi Temple, Trishul, Nandaghunti, and Nilkanth. The GD Birla Memorial School is also located in proximity to this place.

Shopping in Ranikhet

Shopping in Ranikhet can be fun and interesting because of the variety of things that you can buy here, ranging from food items to woollen garments, you have lots of options.

You can visit the Mall in Ranikhet which is well-known for shawls, woollen fabrics, kurtas and jackets. The other option would be to head to the Sadar bazaar of Ranikhet that comprises of small shops. You can buy embroidered clothes in this market. You can also visit Ranikhet Tweed and Shawl Factory to buy woollen handloom products.

Include 'baal mithai', a special sweet dish in your shopping list. The sweet is made of condensed and concentrated milk, with sugar bead sprinkled on it. You can also try 'singaudi' which is rich in sugar and ghee. 

Eating Out in Ranikhet

Eating out in Ranikhet is restricted to having food at the hotel or resort you are staying at, as there are limited restaurants in Ranikhet. Either you can have food in the hotel you put up or try out the few available restaurants in Ranikhet.

River View Restaurant & Resort, Mayur Restaurant and Royal Retreat are the preferred places to eat.

Apart from these, Junoon in the Hills in Village Darmani and Dunagiri Retreat are good options. Dunagiri serves vegetarian cuisines. The menu comprises of homely, delicious, mouth-watering cuisines.
