Apart from that a local version of the pancake is very famous here, which is friend golden brown and eaten with locally made condiments.

By Rail

Guwahati acts as the nearest railhead to Cherrapunji. Although it lies at a distance of 181 km from this region, buss or taxis can be availed from the railway station. Guwahati railway station is well connected to the entire country and regular trains carry passengers to and from.

By Road

The state transport bus station lies in Paltan Bazaar, near Guwahati Railway Station. A tourist can catch Assam state and Meghalaya state transport buses to Shillong. Apart from this, there are many private luxury coach operators nearby, who also ply their buses. There is also the tourist taxi stand that provides tourist taxis up to Shillong.

States buses run frequently between Shillong and Cherrapunji. The tickets too are affordable.

The Shared Taxis currently charge Rs.150 per person, and take in 5 persons. Sumo Maxi Cabs charge Rs.90 to Rs.100 per person to Shillong, and take in 10 passengers

Places to Visit in Cherrapunji

Nohkalikai Waterfalls
These waterfalls lie at a distance of 5 km from Cherrapunji. They are very popular as they have earned the title of being fourth highest waterfall in the world with a height of 1100 ft.

The view of these waterfalls falling off a steep cliff is majestic especially during the monsoons.

It lies at a distance of 12 km from Cherrapunji. This park is directly under the control of the State forest department.

Even though Cherrapunji is not a shopper's paradise, a tourists can pick up some souvenirs in remembrance of their stay at this beautiful wet city. While here, a person must shop for oranges which are famous even in Central India. Sayang and Saflang are popular fruits grown locally in the regions. These are packed in banana leaves and sold on the local street markets around the city.

Tribal jewellery and orange-flavoured honey are a must buy. Among handicrafts, cane, bamboo and wooden artifacts can be brought from Cherrapunji.

Forest-made honey is a specialty of the place. Hand-carved knives and bamboo cutlery are among other artifacts available in this market.

Beautifully woven traditional Khasi skirts called jain-sayem made of silk are an expensive yet worthy buying.

  • As Cherrapuji is a monsoon destination and experiences heavy rainfall during most of the months, it is advised not to go there specially during the monsoons. Always carry your monsoon gears namely, umbrellas and raincoats with you when in Cherrapunji.
  • Always be safe and alert while driving in the hilly areas like Cherrapunji as the road are narrow at some places with sharp turns.
  • Be careful while trekking around the hills. A little careless may prove to be risky. It is also advised that you avoid moving around the isolated areas alone.

Travel to Shillong Hill Station

Shillong is the state capital of Meghalaya, one of India's smallest states and home to the Khasi people. Being a hilly area, Shillong reminded the British of Scotland and they called it "Scotland of the East". Shillong sits at an altitude of 4,908 feet and is the head quarters of the East Khasi Hills district. Shillong Peak at a height of 6,449 feet, is the highest peak in Shillong.

The Meghalaya Transport Corporation has bus services which coordinate with train arrivals at Guwahati. The buses leave Guwahati from 6am to 5 pm and services from Shillong to Guwahati leave at the same time. Taxis are also available at the Guwahati railway station.

By Road

Shillong is connected to Guwahati by National Highway 40. The Meghalaya Road Transport Corporation and private bus operators have regular bus services to various places in Meghalaya and neighbouring states.

Apart from buses tourist taxis and Tata Sumo taxis are also available for journeys between Shillong and Guwahati and vice versa.

By Air

The closest airport to Shillong is at Umroi which is 35 km from Shillong. Only Air India operates on this route. Buses and taxi services are available from Umroi to Shillong.

The other convenient option is the Gopinath Borduloi Airport in Guwahati which is 128 km from Shillong and is connected to the rest of the country by regular flights.

Shared cabs are available from the airport onwards to Shillong. These cabs stop midway at Nongpoh for a short rest and refreshments.

Helicopter services are also available from Guwahati to Tura Tura and Shillong on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The helicopter journey from Guwahati to Shillong is 20 minutes and is quite economical and convenient. Helicopter journeys can be booked from various travel agents in Shillong.

Things to do
If someone wants to experience the drizzle turning to showers that again turning to heavy downpour, no hill town can come to stand equal to Shillong. The Lady Hydari Park, a children's themed park, derives its name from the wife of the first Governor of Assam, Lady Hydari. Established and maintained by the Forest Department, this park incorporates a mini zoo, a deer park, and an open area for children to play.

By Air

By Rail

Places to Visit in Gangtok

The Ranipool river flows by the west side of Gangtok. Gangtok Tourism thrives in its spectacular setting and offers stunning views of the Kanchenjunga from various points in its neighboring areas.

Gangtok city can be accessed only by road from Siliguri. The nearest airport is Bagdogra (124 kilometers). The nearest railway station is New Jaipalguri (NJP). Buses and share taxis ply regularly from Siliguri to Gangtok.

Enchey Gompa should be ideally visited during the months of august and January. Dances and festivals are held during that period.

Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden, established in 1987, is home to different varieties of botanical species. Located near Rumtek Monastery, this garden houses rare flowers, plants and trees including Orchids of Himalayan region.

Maintained and managed by the Forest Department of the Government of Sikkim, this garden also includes dense temperate forests of Oak. There are more than 50 different varieties of tree species located inside this garden.

Deorali Orchid Sanctuary, located next to the Namgyal Institute, is known for its wide collection of orchids. Of 454 species of orchids, 200 species are found in this sanctuary.
