By Air:

Srinagar has cold winters, during which it experiences snowfall, while its summers are warmer. The temperatures may vary from the lowest -19.9°C (below freezing levels) up to a maximum of 24°C. Tourists are advised to plan their holiday accordingly. You must visit during winters if you wish to enjoy the snowfall in the valley and the snow-covered mountains. But, to enjoy the beauty of the valley in full bloom, avoid the peak winters and plan a visit in between extreme summer and winter time. The best time to visit Srinagar is from May to November.

Dal Lake
Category : Nature
It is the most popular for its houseboats and Shikaras and remains crowded throughout the year. The lake covers an area of approximately 26 sq km and is divided intro four sections.

It provides a perfect site to enjoying kayaking, swimming, angling, canoeing, water surfing, houseboats and Shikara riding. Fishing activities and water plant harvesting is also done at the lake. During winters, the temperature falls so low that it sometimes freezes the Lake.

Situated in the backdrop of the Dal Lake, the Nagin Lake is entitled as the 'Jewel in the Ring'. A narrow causeway is what separates the two lakes.

Tourists can spot many Shikaras and houseboats. Water skiing, boat sailing facilities are available at this lake. The lake is a little isolated and much cleaner than the Dal lake.

Jama Masjid
Category : Religious
It is among the oldest mosques in Srinagar and displays a monument of Islamic architecture. It was built in 1674 with four spires tower, 370 pillars, prayer halls, etc.

 Each pillar is made from a single piece of deodar trunk. The temple was destroyed and restored many times. It is also known as the Friday Mosque.

Located on the banks of Dal Lake, the Mosque is made from white marble and a fusion of Kashmiri and Mughal styles of architecture can be noticed in its construction.

The Mosque is also called Dargah Sharif, Asar-e-Sharif, and Madinat-us-Sani. There is a shrine in the Mosque which is believed to contain a relic-a hair of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

Shankaracharya Temple
Category : Religious
Located at a height of 1,100 ft, the temple is on top of Shankaracharya Hill. It is believed to be built around 200 BC by Jaluka, the son of Emperor Ashoka.

Sri Pratap Singh Museum
Category : History & Culture
Established in 1898, the museum exhibits some of the rare terracotta heads of 3rd century, various molded terracotta plaques from 4th & 5th century, ancient brass model of Lokeshvara and a green stone figure of Lord Vishnu sitting on a Garuda.

The museum also displays a 5th century copper image of Buddha carved in Gandhara architectural style and some paintings, ancient coins, handicrafts and arms.

Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden

The Garden is located at the foothills of Zabarwan Mountains near Dal Lake. The garden is famous for its annual Tulip Festival that last for seven days.

The garden is very spacious and has more than 70 varieties of colored tulip flowers. About 90 acres of land nurture 1.3 million tulip bulbs. Among its vicinity are other gardens like Nishat Garden, Shalimar Garden, Achabal Bagh, Chashma Shahi Garden, Pari Mahal and other Mughal Gardens.

Located on the banks of Dal Lake, the garden was built by Abdul Hasan Asaf Khan in 1633 and is one of the largest Mughal Gardens built here.

Dachigam Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary is recognized for housing the rare Kashmir stag Hangul and black & brown bears. It is encircled by beautiful mountains and greenery. The sanctuary is spread out across an area of approx 141 sq km. In 1951, the sanctuary was acknowledged as a National Park.

A wide variety of flora and fauna is present in the sanctuary. The sanctuary also provides a habitat for various avifauna species too. Special permit is necessary to enter the park.

Shalimar Garden
Shalimar Bagh is one of the beautiful gardens in Srinagar, which is regarded as the monument of love. This bagh is also called as Garden of Char Minar, Faiz Baksh and Farah Baksh.

Pari Mahal or Quntilon
Pari Mahal refers to the 'House of Fairies', which is also popularly known as 'Quntilon'. This monument is located above the Chashm-e-Shahi Gardens and was once a Buddhist monastery.

Tawang is famous for its carpets, shawls, chadors (wrap around skirts worn by women), hand made bags and clothing items. Other interesting items one can pick up here are Buddha statues, prayer wheels and lucky charms crafted out of wood.

Tawang is also famous for porcelain and chinaware and you can pick up some beautiful piece of crockery here, which are excellent for gifting purposes as well. Other local items you can buy here are jewellery crafted out of bamboo and grass necklaces.

The staple food of Tawang is Zan, which is a flat bread made of millets or barley and is served with vegetables or meat or a cheese and soybean topping. Another popular dish here is the Tawangese biryani, called Gyapa Khazi, which is cooked using chili flakes, garlic, ginger, butter, pepper and dried fish. Apart from that a local version of the pancake is very famous here, which is friend golden brown and eaten with locally made condiments.

One of the most popular restaurants in Tawang is the Dragon Restaurant. Located in the Old Market, they serve some very tasty local dishes, such as Churpa, which is essentially a fermented cheese broth cooked with fungi and vegetables.

By Air

Shillong (Umroi) airport is the nearest to Cherrapunji. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya and is well connected to other major cities of the nation. Indian airlines run a 50 seater ATR German aircraft on this route.

Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati is the nearest international airport to Cherrapunji.

There are flights from New Delhi or Kolkata to Guwahati. Flights from Kolkata operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

By Rail

Guwahati acts as the nearest railhead to Cherrapunji. Although it lies at a distance of 181 km from this region, buss or taxis can be availed from the railway station. Guwahati railway station is well connected to the entire country and regular trains carry passengers to and from.

By Road

The state transport bus station lies in Paltan Bazaar, near Guwahati Railway Station. A tourist can catch Assam state and Meghalaya state transport buses to Shillong. Apart from this, there are many private luxury coach operators nearby, who also ply their buses. There is also the tourist taxi stand that provides tourist taxis up to Shillong.

States buses run frequently between Shillong and Cherrapunji. The tickets too are affordable.

The Shared Taxis currently charge Rs.150 per person, and take in 5 persons. Sumo Maxi Cabs charge Rs.90 to Rs.100 per person to Shillong, and take in 10 passengers

Places to Visit in Cherrapunji

The hills of Cherrapunji are untouched by the dull hands of busy metropolis lives. This region is not yet exploited and this fact adds to their charm, giving all tourists a chance at exploration.  

Double Decker Root Bridge
This bridge is amongst the premier attractions of Cherrapunji. It is situated in the Tyma Village and acts as the pride of successful bio-engineering.

Basically, it is a 100 feet long, two-tier living root bridge. It gets across at least 50 people or more at one point of time. For such a bridge to become fully functional, a period of 10 to 15 years is required. The best quality about it is that it gets stronger everyday.

Dainthlen Waterfalls
Located at a distance of 5 km from Cherrapunji, they act as perfect picnic spots, furnishing a pleasant drive full with scenic beauty to look around for, in order to reach here. Rangjyrthej is a village that lies near these falls that is worth a visit.

Nohkalikai Waterfalls
These waterfalls lie at a distance of 5 km from Cherrapunji. They are very popular as they have earned the title of being fourth highest waterfall in the world with a height of 1100 ft.

The view of these waterfalls falling off a steep cliff is majestic especially during the monsoons.

It lies at a distance of 12 km from Cherrapunji. This park is directly under the control of the State forest department.

Shopping in Cherrapunji
Even though Cherrapunji is not a shopper's paradise, a tourists can pick up some souvenirs in remembrance of their stay at this beautiful wet city. While here, a person must shop for oranges which are famous even in Central India. Sayang and Saflang are popular fruits grown locally in the regions. These are packed in banana leaves and sold on the local street markets around the city.

What to buy and where to shop?
Tribal jewellery and orange-flavoured honey are a must buy. Among handicrafts, cane, bamboo and wooden artifacts can be brought from Cherrapunji.

Apart from this, there is also Police Bazaar that has many food stalls along with shops selling various other things. The market is popular for its locally produced wooden and bamboo handicrafts. Forest-made honey is a specialty of the place. Hand-carved knives and bamboo cutlery are among other artifacts available in this market.

Beautifully woven traditional Khasi skirts called jain-sayem made of silk are an expensive yet worthy buying.

  • As Cherrapuji is a monsoon destination and experiences heavy rainfall during most of the months, it is advised not to go there specially during the monsoons. Always carry your monsoon gears namely, umbrellas and raincoats with you when in Cherrapunji.
  • Always be safe and alert while driving in the hilly areas like Cherrapunji as the road are narrow at some places with sharp turns.
  • Be careful while trekking around the hills. A little careless may prove to be risky. It is also advised that you avoid moving around the isolated areas alone.

Travel to Shillong Hill Station

Shillong is the state capital of Meghalaya, one of India's smallest states and home to the Khasi people. Being a hilly area, Shillong reminded the British of Scotland and they called it "Scotland of the East". Shillong sits at an altitude of 4,908 feet and is the head quarters of the East Khasi Hills district. Shillong Peak at a height of 6,449 feet, is the highest peak in Shillong.

Shillong does not have rail service and the closest railway station is at Guwahati in Assam, which is located at a distance of 104 km from Shillong and is well connected to all major cities of India.

The Meghalaya Transport Corporation has bus services which coordinate with train arrivals at Guwahati. The buses leave Guwahati from 6am to 5 pm and services from Shillong to Guwahati leave at the same time. Taxis are also available at the Guwahati railway station.

By Road

Shillong is connected to Guwahati by National Highway 40. The Meghalaya Road Transport Corporation and private bus operators have regular bus services to various places in Meghalaya and neighbouring states.

Apart from buses tourist taxis and Tata Sumo taxis are also available for journeys between Shillong and Guwahati and vice versa.

By Air

The closest airport to Shillong is at Umroi which is 35 km from Shillong. Only Air India operates on this route. Buses and taxi services are available from Umroi to Shillong.

The other convenient option is the Gopinath Borduloi Airport in Guwahati which is 128 km from Shillong and is connected to the rest of the country by regular flights.

Shared cabs are available from the airport onwards to Shillong. These cabs stop midway at Nongpoh for a short rest and refreshments.

Helicopter services are also available from Guwahati to Tura Tura and Shillong on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The helicopter journey from Guwahati to Shillong is 20 minutes and is quite economical and convenient. Helicopter journeys can be booked from various travel agents in Shillong.

Things to do
If someone wants to experience the drizzle turning to showers that again turning to heavy downpour, no hill town can come to stand equal to Shillong. Travel from one corner to other on bike or on foot, the enveloping ambience of the place would accompany everywhere. The Entomological Museum, established in the 1930s, is more popularly known as the Butterfly Museum. It is a private property owned by M/s Wankhar, Riatsamthiah, Shillong. It is the sole museum in India which is dedicated to preserving the species of butterflies and moths.

This colourful museum, with 1,600 species of butterflies, insects and moths, is a veritable treat for visitors. The museum remains open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Lady Hydari Park
The Lady Hydari Park, a children's themed park, derives its name from the wife of the first Governor of Assam, Lady Hydari. Established and maintained by the Forest Department, this park incorporates a mini zoo, a deer park, and an open area for children to play.

The vast stretches of rose-beds make it strikingly beautiful. The park has been designed in a Japanese style, as there are several elements like rhododendron plants, small ponds and willow trees which remind one of the garden style of Japan.

How to Reach Kalimpong

By Air:

By Road:

Siliguri serves as the gateway to reach Kalimpong. Siliguri is well connected by road to Kolkata, Guwahati, Patna. On the other hand, there is a good network of internal roads, which also link Kalimpong to Gangtok in Sikkim.
